The world's most poorly acronymed film festival is back (PIFF 2012)

The Portland International Film Festival. Sounds good on paper, but then you get to the acronyming (which is a verb now, by the way) and things fall apart. PIFF just doesn't quite work. Whether it brings to mind a certain brand of superior cannabis or a mixtape upload site almost certainly named for said superior cannabis, PIFF is definitely not the way to go when it comes to accruing prestige.

Regardless of its acronym, the Portland International Film Festival has always brought it, as it were, with the lineup of unreleased international films, and it's back to make dismal Portland February bearable once again. It goes from February 9th to the 25th, and is housed in theaters primarily around downtown Portland.

The full lineup is released on January 31st, but The Oregonian's Shawn Levy has leaked a few of the slated titles. As is to be expected, there is your standard art house festival-bait, (This is Not a Film? Really? Get over yourself) but the lineup looks strong, especially the "midnight" showings (aka the movies that you're girlfriend doesn't say, "Oh that looks interesting" about) Titles like Let the Bullets Fly and Kill List give you a pretty good idea of what to expect on this front.

Needless to say about a festival that has given Portland early looks at films like John Hillcoat's The Proposition and Takeshi Kitano's Outrage, excitement levels are precipitously high. And if you can manage to steer clear of the painfully-boring-and-totally-incromprehensible-so-it-must-be-good fare like last year's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, there will definitely be some fun to be had.

Check out PIFF 35's website (which is seriously in need of some SEO) for ticketing and venue information.
